  • Pics for Cruise: Experience the Rhine and the Sea

It seems like the North Sea tidied up here to give space to the Rhine. The onlooker has a clear, sweeping vista of the river separating into a wide delta and eventually, having completed a 1,320-km journey, disappearing into the sea. More than 58 million people live in the Rhine's catchment area and 20 cities have developed along its banks. The last of these is the global harbour city of Rotterdam, with its futuristic architectural wonders. Amsterdam, a colourful, cheery centre of culture; Gent, a vibrant student city; elegant Antwerp, with its buildings from every epoch; and of course, the biggest city: the happy-go-lucky Cologne – the Rhine passes through all of these on its way to the IJsselmeer. And the only thing to be heard at this expanse of water is peace, the sound of the wind, the seagulls and the sand crunching beneath your feet as you walk briskly across the mudflats.

Harbour Arrival Departure
1st Cologne 5:00 pm
Reiseverlauf Rhine River Cruise Cologne, the old Cathedral city, is also one of the most important traffic hubs and commercial centres in Germany, with world famous trade fairs and a busy shipping traffic. Cologne developed out of a Roman colony and looks back on a history of more than 2000 years. In the Middle Ages it was one of the leading towns in Germany. The Second World War destroyed most of the inner city; these parts were rebuilt in a modern style. The landmark and emblem of the city is the Cathedral, a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Other tourist attractions are the town hall, the Malakoff Tower, the St Martin Church and the old abbey.

5th Amsterdam 1:00 am 11:30 pm
Reiseverlauf Rhine River Cruise Amsterdam is located in the provinces of Noord-Holland. Including its ten outer suburbs, Amsterdam has a population of over one million inhabitants, forming the largest conurbation in what is known as “Randstad Holland”. The city is the hub and cornerstone of the Dutch economy thanks mainly to its importance as a commercial centre and the country’s second largest port. Amsterdam is unusual in many ways, i.e. it has more than 2000 architectural monuments, world-class museums and historic canals, but also its unique and liberal atmosphere makes it stand out.
6th Rotterdam 8:00 am 2:00 pm
Reiseverlauf Rhine River Cruise Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, is located on both banks of the Nieuwe Maas, the southern arm of the Rhine, joined by the little River Rotte. Since the opening of the Europoort in 1966, Rotterdam has been the largest port in the world, and in consequence has developed into a gigantic commercial and industrial centre whose full potential is still very far from being realised.
7th Gent 7:00 am 6:30 pm
8th Antwerp 3:00 am 6:00 pm
Reiseverlauf Rhine River Cruise Thanks to its port, Antwerp was an important centre of trade and commerce even before historical records began. In addition to its long established traditions in banking and insurance, the continual expansion and modernisation of the port has seen the emergence of a multitude of trades and industries. Today Greater Antwerp is the biggest industrial conurbation in Belgium. Antwerp’s international reputation is partly due to the diamond industry and the special role the city plays in the diamond trade worldwide. The city’s remarkable reputation does not just rest on its trade and industry, it is also the cultural capital of Flanders.
9th Nijmegen 9:00 am 1:00 pm
Reiseverlauf Rhine River Cruise Nijmegen, situated at the left bank of the Waal, the southern arm of the Rhine is one of the two gateways of the Netherlands on the Lower Rhine. Nijmegen once was a Roman settlement. In the Carolingian period it was an imperial residence, and later became a free imperial city and Hanseatic Town. In 1579 it joined the Union of Utrecht. The town’s prosperity began only with the development of industry in the latter part of the 19th century. Highlights of the old town are the Grote Markt and the St Sevenskerk (13th to 15th century), the town hall.
